A three hour’s drive from Mumbai, Igatpuri is one of the popular hill stations of India’s western state of Maharashtra. Situated at a height of 2000 feet above sea level, it’s also one of the best places to visit in monsoon with cascading waterfalls, mist and verdant greenery everywhere.
Picturesquely nestled in the splendorous Sahyadri mountain ranges (or Western Ghats), Igatpuri is a heaven for nature lovers and adventure sports enthusiasts. Most of its surrounding high peaks are ancient forts which are popular among rock climbers, trekkers and hikers. It serves as a perfect getaway from the daily chaos and stressful life in a bustling city like Mumbai.
Last week, I spent four wonderful days with my family at this beautiful destination. We stayed at JenJon Holiday Homes – Igatpuri Lake Vaitarna, a calm and serene place set amidst nature’s bounty, surrounded by mountains and along the banks of Lake Upper Vaitarna. By the way, the size of the Lake Vaitarna – the largest source of water for Mumbai, is about half the size of Mumbai.
JenJon Holiday Homes is a reputed Holiday Home establishment based in Mumbai. Its properties, located in some of the best vacation destinations in Maharashtra, offer accommodation options that go beyond the traditional hotel room. These include Igatpuri, Nagaon (Alibaug), Phansad (Roha/Pali), Lavasa and Panchgani.
Let me introduce you to JenJon Holiday Homes – Igatpuri Lake Vaitarna 🙂
JenJon Holiday Homes – Igatpuri Lake Vaitarna is remotely located. But the JenJon team provide detailed directions, so the place is easy to find. And there are signboards on the way too. The narrow road is bumpy at stretches. Night travel is best avoided as there are no lights on the way, to and from the property.

From here, the property is just a short distance away. When you drive through the main gate, it feels as if you’re entering a private hideaway surrounded by endless mountains in the distance 🙂
The Lake Vaitarna property is spread across three acres. The accommodation options are: Swiss Chalet, Glass House and Java Plum Cottage.
The Swiss Chalet, comprising of two floors, has two rooms on each floor. The rooms are made of Canadian Pine Wood, and have French windows with a full view of the swimming pool. The upper floor offers a good view of Lake Vaitarna.
The Glass House, as the name suggests, is made of glass. It comprises of three floors, and has one room on each floor. The rooms are made of sturdy glass panes. The upper floors offer full view of Lake Vaitarna.
The Java Plum Cottage takes its name from the Java Plum Tree situated next to it. It’s a hexagon-shaped single floor building with six independent rooms.
Swiss Chalet and Glass House are premium accommodations. With only thirteen rooms in the grounds, it feels as if you’re staying at the home of a nice friend 🙂

The rooms in all three buildings are air-conditioned, and have an attached bathroom, a double-bed, a double sofa-cum-bed and a TV with Tata Sky DTH connection. So to speak, each room can accommodate four adults.
Our rooms offered a great view of the surroundings, including sunrise and sunset on the hills in the distance.
The room windows have insect screens. This way, every morning, we could enjoy fresh air without bothering about insects and mosquitoes getting in. And see a new day dawn from the bed, enjoy the beautiful mountain and lake views and, of course, the non-stop chirping of birds 🙂
Being the start of the winter season, mornings and nights were pleasantly cold. But afternoons were hot. Power outages are common in this region. They had a generator, so we managed with fans till power was restored.
Spending a quiet evening, taking in the array of nature sounds and the diminishing glow of the setting sun is a wonderful experience 🙂

We had a full meal package which included bed tea, breakfast, lunch, high tea and dinner. Food was absolutely great. It tasted delicious and home-cooked.
Meals are freshly prepared in the in-house kitchen by the staff as per guest preferences. They have two wonderful cooks: one for Maharashtrian and other Indian dishes, and another for Continental and Chinese dishes. There’s a separate kitchen for preparing Jain and vegetarian food.
The thali-style meals include salad, two vegetarian or non-vegetarian dishes, roti, rice, dal, and dessert. I opted for non-vegetarian food. They serve chicken, and freshwater fish from the Vaitarna. I tasted around ten different kinds of yummy chicken preparations during the three days. Fried “Chopda” fish was quite tasty. In vegetarian too, there were delicious preparations. Even in rice, there were varieties: Basmati for biryani, Indrayani (it’s grown in this region) or two other local brands for plain steamed rice. Likewise, breakfasts were wholesome and freshly prepared. Bottled mineral water was available, but filtered water was good, so I chose the latter. For high tea, they serve vegetarian sandwiches, onion pakoras or any other snacks that you prefer.
Meals are usually served in the restaurant, but they can also be served under the 100-year-old mango tree to provide a great scenic backdrop to your meals.
Services & facilities…
The property staff comprises of twelve well-trained local boys, who speak Marathi and Hindi. All of them were friendly, well-mannered, and prompt.
Being a holiday home, certain facilities like that of a resort are not available, including laundry facility. Housekeeping is carried out once a two days and linen is changed after two days’ stay. Towels, soaps, bed sheets, blankets, pillows etc. are provided. Iron is available for self-use.
There are no medical shops, hospitals, general or retail shops in the vicinity. And no public transport. IDEA and Vodafone are the only mobile networks available in this area. The restaurant has a WiFi facility, but it’s painfully slow.
A number of fun and interesting activities like nature walks, treks and picnics are available. Some activities like angling, archery, boating, badminton, bullock cart rides, cycling, ATV (All-Terrain Vehicle) ride are chargeable.

A short trek from here leads to Lake Vaitarna Waterfall, Trip Advisor’s third most popular place to visit in Igatpuri. It’s a great picnic spot for JenJon guests.

I had a great time here. And I’m very sure that you will too 🙂
Best time to visit and nearby sights…
Although you can visit Igatpuri throughout the year, the best time to visit is from June to September and November to March. During monsoon, this tiny place is at its magical best with lush green dense forests and gushing waterfalls. During monsoon and winter, it gets very foggy along the route, with visibility dropping to less than 10 metres.
From JenJon Holiday Homes, some of the nearby places to visit include Vaitarna Dam (2 kms), Grover Zampa Vineyards (20 kms), Sula Wines (51 kms), Trimbakeshwar Temple (20 kms), Shagun Water Park (25 kms), Maharashtra’s highest peak, Kalsubai Peak (35 kms), Bhandardhara (47 kms) and Devlali Gliding Club (45 kms). And there is the world-renowned Vipassana International Academy which offers training in Vipassana, the ancient technique of meditation for peace and spiritual rejuvenation. Some of the popular forts in the vicinity of the property are Tringalwadi and Ratangad, while ancient temples include Amruteshwar and Ghatandevi.
